Some of the areas in which Laser Scanning has been applied:

  • Building facades to produce elevations, floorplans etc...
  • Quarry's for accurate volume calculations.
  • Cliff faces for study into cliff face recession.
  • Complex plant for modelling of plant detail.
  • Scanning of Electicity Pylons and overhead cables. Infringement surveys.
  • Mining, for calculation of overbreak and underbreak. Mapping of workings using robotic vehicle allows safe data collection.
  • Topographic surveys.

Coastal laser scanning

There are many applications for terrestrial laser scanning. Some of which include: -3D visualisations and modelling / coastal monitoring / slope stability / powerlines-for tower structural analysis and geometry, vegetation clearance, sub-stations and more / highway surveys (with almost no traffic management) / building elevations / structures - bridges, dams etc / railway infrastructure / mines and quarries / volumes / industrial and process plant / refineries / oil ang gas rigs / forensics - accident and crime scenes / ships hull modelling.

Laser scanning has a wide variety of applications and it is certainly the case that there are applications that are not listed here. Most laser scans involve the data capture of complex surfaces and often inaccessible environments.

There are many possible outputs that can be produced from the point cloud. From basic measurements, ortho-images, derived 2D/3D drawings, meshes/surfaces or solid modelling. Merrett Survey's have over 10 years of experience in this field and it is important to approach a laser scanning job in an informed way and to avoid some of the pitfalls.
